The Best Flowers for an August Wedding
August is a wonderful month for wedding flowers, with the cutting garden usually full of colour, texture and plenty of choice. There’s an abundance of flowers and foliage available to work with, making it a lovely time of year for relaxed, natural arrangements with a beautiful late-summer feel.
My Favourite August Wedding Flowers
There are so many beautiful flowers around in August, but some of my favourites are dahlias, cosmos, zinnias, scabious, phlox and asters.
Dahlias come in so many different colours and shapes, making them incredibly versatile for wedding bouquets. Cosmos are much lighter and add movement, while Zinnias bring plenty of colour and character. Scabious, phlox and asters are great for adding texture and smaller details, helping to create that natural, garden-style look that works so well for summer weddings.
Choosing Your Colours
August flowers give you lots of options when it comes to colour. You could keep things soft with blush, peach, pale pink and berry tones, or go for something bolder with brighter, more colourful shades.
I particularly like using a mix of soft pinks, peach and berry shades for an August wedding. They work beautifully with the flowers that are naturally available and create a lovely late-summer palette without feeling too formal.
August Wedding Flowers in Hot Weather
Of course, August can also bring some very hot days, and heat can be challenging for flowers. Keeping everything well hydrated and properly conditioned is really important, particularly when flowers need to look their best from the ceremony through to the end of the wedding day.
As a florist, I take this into consideration when preparing the flowers, from conditioning them properly when they arrive to choosing varieties that are better suited to warmer conditions. Keeping flowers cool and hydrated for as long as possible also helps them stay looking fresh throughout the day.
There’s a lot that happens behind the scenes to make sure the flowers are ready for the big day, especially when the temperatures rise.
Final Thoughts
August offers plenty of colour and variety when it comes to wedding flowers, and I love creating arrangements that feel relaxed, natural and connected to the season.
Whether you’re drawn to soft, romantic shades or want to embrace brighter summer colour, there’s plenty to work with at this time of year.
